In order to ensure smooth transition of the medical reform, over the past one month, pharmacists with party branch of Medical Technology Department of Changping District Hospital of TCM have put their own families behind for the sake of the “bigger family” to work hard overtime and make selfless contributions without complaints. Leading the masses, the party members have given full play to their role of “main force of the medical reform”, practiced “Two Studies, One Action” with their actual actions, implemented various reform tasks without discounts and ensured smooth transition of the medical reform. To provide better care to the organizational life of party members and the masses, on May 6, Party Branch Secretary Liu Jianhua organized party members, activists and pharmacists from Department of Pharmacy to take their children to Yaowang Valley of the Ming Tombs to take part in “Little Inheritors” TCM culture parent-child activity. The activity created an opportunity for the parents to intimately interact with their children, and for the children to walk into the nature and learn to identify herbs. The children went into the magical world of Chinese herbal medicine by listening, watching and doing hands-on practices.
The sun was shinning, the grass was growing and the flowers were blooming. In this vibrant season, the children walked cheerily down the lane in Yaowang Valley, carrying small shovels and buckets. Party Branch Secretary Liu Jianhua led the team to the peony planting site where he divided the children into two groups of “small pharmacists” and “small labor experts” based on their ages. The small pharmacists followed pharmacist Du Juan to study some simple knowledge of polygonatum with the help of a picture book about it. The small labor experts stood in line while Mr. Liu, like a kindergarten teacher, told them gently:“the beautiful flowers blooming here are peonies, the skin of their roots, after being cleaned and processed, is a kind of herb which can cure and save patients. You moms and dads distribute these processed herbs to patients so as to ease their sufferings and cure their diseases, isn’t that great?”The children listened attentively, half comprehended. Some responded, some nodded, some adoringly looked at their parents, and some can’t wait to fetch water. “Let’s get working! Water the small herbs.” Under the guidance of the parents, the children got busy with their shovels and buckets. One child discovered an earthworm while digging, he intended to kill it with his shovel but was timely stopped by pharmacist Zhai Wenjuan who told him that earthworm can help to loosen the soil and is beneficial to the growth of the plants, besides, it is also a kind of Chinese herbal medicine called lumbricus with the function of treating cough. On hearing this, he immediately took back his shovel. On the slope, numbers of aconitum kusnezoffiis were isolated on the left side of the road by the wooden fence, with striking warnings on the fence, as the plant is very toxic, a taste of its leave might be fatal. Pharmacist Liu Tong explained in detail to her daughter about the features of this plant, to which the child listened carefully. The practical education brought about meaningful harvest to the children. The pharmacists and their children worked together to water and earth the plants, identify and pick the herbs, and among the children, they intimately helped and cooperated with each other. The bustling and exciting activity became a beautiful scenery in the early summer.
The parent-child interactive activity organized by party branch of Medical Technology Department encouraged the children to touch, to see, to smell and to feel the magical Chinese herbal medicine. Through the activity, the children got to know related knowledge about Chinese herbal medicine in an entertaining atmosphere, became interested in traditional Chinese herbal medicine, and got to know about their parents’ work. It has also motivated us a lot in our learning and working. The cultural heritage and development of traditional Chinese medicine should start from the children, and the pharmacists of Medical Technology Department will also stay true to their mission of developing TCM and forge ahead.
