By Guo Junying from Health Education Department

October 8, 2017 is the 20th Hypertension Day in China. According to the National Hypertension Day Activity Program of Huairou District, Huairou District Hospital of TCM conducted the publicity activities in various forms.

First of all, the electronic screen of the hospital outpatient hall is used to display the content of the hypertensive health education points each day in a rolling manner to the visiting patients and their families.

Secondly, Microblog and WeChat are used to disseminate the core information on the prevention and treatment of hypertension for the masses.

Thirdly, on September 29, the hospital organized the medical personnel from the departments of cardiology, encephalopathy, diabetes, orthopedics, dentistry and dermatology to carry out the free consultation activities with the theme of "knowing your blood pressure and preventing cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases" and spread the knowledge of healthy lifestyle by hanging the banners of "reducing the intake of salt, oil and sugar, maintaining the oral bone health, and keeping a healthy weight". This means that the healthy lifestyle starts from reducing the intake of salt, oil and sugar and maintaining the oral hygiene and the moderate physical exercise can help maintain the bone health and keep a healthy weight. The medical personnel at the site provided medical consultation services for more than 200 people in respect of hypertension, coronary heart disease and diabetes, made free blood pressure measurements for more than 120 people, and offered bean-burying treatment at ear acupuncture points for more than 40 people suffering hypertension, constipation and insomnia. In addition, they also distributed to the masses more than 800 copies of health education brochures on hypertension, diabetes and spleen-stomach diseases, influenza, tuberculosis and AIDS.

These various forms of publicity activities help to raise the residents’ awareness of hypertension and its prevention and control, to improve their knowledge on the prevention and control of hypertension, and to convey to the masses that hypertension is the biggest cause of cardiovascular disease, which is mainly caused by overweight and obesity, high-salt diet and excessive alcohol consumption. Therefore, taking active and effective measures for the hypertension prevention and control is one of the most important and direct measures to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Of them, the control of weight, and the limitation on salt intake and alcohol drinking are an effective measure to prevent and control hypertension. Reducing salt intake can effectively lower blood pressure. The salt intake per person each day should not exceed 6 grams. Irregular treatment, abnormal medication or forgetting to take medicine is the main cause of blood pressure fluctuations. Regular measurement of blood pressure is an effective measure to control high blood pressure, which is also the only reliable way for hypertension patients to understand their blood pressure levels. The active publicity activities may be used to help more people change their poor lifestyles by reducing the intake of salt, edible oil and sugar, maintaining oral and bone health, and keeping healthy weight, thus ultimately reducing the occurrence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases caused by hypertension.
