"I feel a little scared to be restrained by a strap on the hospital bed, like giving myself completely to strangers. If I were a patient and commit my life to the other person, can I be well taken care of?"
A few days ago, the nursing department of Beijing Huairou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine held a "nurse-patient transposition experience" activity. Fifty nurses from 13 nursing units took off their white clothes and put on sick clothes to experience the patients' feelings when receiving various treatments.
During the activity, the "patients" who put on the sick clothes have experienced 9 nursing operations including ECG monitoring, oxygen inhalation, indwelling gastric tube, intravenous infusion, changing the lying position, using air mattresses, restraining gloves, restraining belt, receiving moxibustion treatment.
Encephalopathy nurse:" I feel painful when knocked on the back with bare hands, even with clothes on. It hurts more with body naked. Instead, when the spitting device is used to pat me on the back, the strength is so even that I feel very comfortable."
Endocrinology nurse: "After experiencing the position of lying sideways with bed head raised 30°, the pain in the shoulder and hip is unbearable in less than ten minutes. For a patient who is bedridden and cannot move, it will be more uncomfortable. After raising the head by 15°, I feel better and comfortable. "
Respiratory nurse: "During the moxibustion treatment, when touching the position of the metal plate on the moxibustion box, the hand will withdraw reflexively so that the moxibustion box is easy to tip over. Consequently, removing the metal plate on the moxibustion box will not burn."
Through this "nurse-patient transposition experience" activity, nurses had a new vison to regard their work and rediscovered the details of services neglected in daily work. They began understanding the patient's requirements and the reasons for patients' dissatisfaction and noncooperation.
Everyone realized that any nursing operation was not so comfortable as they thought. Some casual tiny actions might increase the patients' pain.
Everyone felt the mixed emotions as a patient, the strangeness to the environment and medical staff during hospitalization, the fear of being restrained in a hospital bed, and the emergence of negative emotions. The activity let the nursing staff understand the patient.
Everyone said they would be more careful when nursing patients in the future, so as to provide patients with more thoughtful and meticulous heart-warming services.
In the "Nursing Patient Transposition Experience" activity, the Nursing Department concluded and summarized 50 issues in three aspects, including environment, operation treatment, and humanistic care. After they analyzed and optimized these issues, 21 measures were rectified and implemented.
"Sometimes to heal, often to help, always to comfort", this famous quote is still shining with the light of humanity.
Through the pattern of "experience-think-improve", Huairou TCM nurses found shortcomings in their work, actively improved the work and comprehensively understood the physical and mental needs of patients. With warm and caring attendance from nurses, patients can feel a sense of security and intimacy.
