As part of a program called Civility in Action aimed at improving behavior at zebra crossings, four volunteers of the Gulou Qihuang volunteer service team of Gulou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, took to the streets at 7am on June 5. Dressed in blue waistcoats and wielding flags, they stood in Zhang Zizhong Road directing traffic, adding a touch of color and action for rush-hour crowds.
On a very hot day the volunteers politely asked pedestrians and motorists to follow the rules: "Please use the zebra crossing and only cross when the light is green"; "Please be patient as you wait for the green light"; "Please be careful when you are overtaking."
Volunteers also took the time to patiently answer pedestrians' questions.
Acting in a civilized way in public is something that depends on the actions of each individual, some of the volunteers said, and that everyone can contribute to making Beijing a thoroughly international, first-class and livable city.
