On November 25, 2020, the second phase of the Application Training Lecture Series of the 2021 National Natural Science Foundation in Dongzhimen Hospital of Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was held in the conference room on the 13th floor of the first phase of Tongzhou Campus. The Tencent conference was broadcast live simultaneously, with nearly 100 medical staff and researchers online and offline to participate in this training. The theme of this lecture is the exchange of experience and case analysis of national nature declaration. Professor Hua Qian, Dean of the School of Life Sciences, Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Professor Chang Jingling, Dongzhimen Hospital of Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were specially invited to attend.
At the beginning of the meeting, Professor Chang Jingling gave a lecture on the topic of "From the thinking of clinical diagnosis and treatment of traditional Chinese medicine to the experience of successfully applying for scientific research projects - taking the National Natural Science Foundation of China as an example". He pointed out the importance of scientific research in boosting the growth of young medical talents, and proposed that doctors should have good qualities such as dedicated research, innovative thinking, enthusiasm and perseverance in order to do a good job in scientific research. Professor Chang Jingling reviewed her mental journey from the thinking of TCM clinical diagnosis and treatment to the successful application to the country, and summarized it into three main points: stable direction, perseverance, and continuous accumulation. Next, Professor Chang introduced the methods of establishing TCM scientific research ideas with regards to cultivating innovative thinking, finding ideas for topic selection, and basic principles of experimental design. Combined with his own application and review experience, he pointed out the details and notes that often appeared in the national nature bidding documents.
Professor Hua Qian shared his experience on the design and application of the National Natural Science Foundation of China concerning three parts: fund topic selection, tender writing and evaluation process. First of all, she pointed out that innovation does not come from nothing, but is based on a deep understanding of cutting-edge research. Next, Professor Hua Qian compared bidding writing to management work, and believed that the core of bidding writing was to clearly state his research advantages and convince the reviewers. Taking a real tender as an example, she explained the writing method with regard to project basis, research content and objectives, research plan and feasibility, etc., especially emphasized that subtitles should use expository sentences to explain the problem concisely and the writing should be logical and clear , the key points should be highlighted.
In this lecture, the two professors answered many questions such as no ideas, no articles, and no preliminary foundation from the first-time applicants, emphasizing that the NSFC review focuses on innovation, intrinsic potential and interdisciplinary development, and qualifications are not the most important judgment criteria. Innovative thinking comes from solid clinical knowledge and a comprehensive grasp of academic frontier progress. Mastering practical skills in other interdisciplinary disciplines is also one of the sources of innovative thinking. As for the issue of unpublished articles, every doctor should regard every patient as a valuable scientific research asset, accumulate scientific research materials, and prepare in advance, make a plan, and start writing as soon as possible without delay. The two professors spoke earnestly and encouraged all "newcomers" to overcome the fear of difficulties and actively report, while the "veterans" of the country should go further and work together to become famous medical experts with high medical skills and academic attainments.
The writing of grant applications can easily cause anxiety among young researchers, but the opportunity belongs to those who are willing to continuously improve their research ideas, and those who are willing to constantly improve the quality of their bids. Without submitting an application, there will never be a chance. This lecture is the second phase of our hospital's 2021 National Natural Science Foundation application training series. In the future, the Science and Technology Office will actively build a high-level academic platform, create a good scientific research atmosphere, and promote the sustainable development of the hospital's scientific research work.
